Plants come in a rainbow of colours! Have a favourite flower you’ve always wanted to paint but didn’t know where to start? Acquire skills to visually record the magic of the botanical world around you. Everyone can draw and this workshop focuses on individual attention in the exploration and use of the fundamental principles of line, shading, composition and the effect of light to define the form, shape and texture of the specimen. Colour mixing and its application and daily demonstrations are an integral part of the course. A full tone pencil drawing of the plant will be transformed into a full colour botanical illustration in watercolour. Accuracy of botanical details are emphasised throughout the week. Returning students will continue from where they left off previously. Daily morning exercises will canvas the spectrum of the rainbow of plant colours from yellow through to blue, violet and indigo.

Barbara Duckworth has a Diploma of Art from Central Technical School, Toronto, Canada and studied Natural History Drawing at the British Museum of Natural History, London. She worked for the Australian Museum from 1975-1988. From 1988-1999 she worked at Macquarie University as Biological Illustrator/Artist and taught Scientific Illustration courses in fundamental and advanced techniques. Barbara taught 2 classes in Botanical Drawing and Painting at Ku-Ring-Gai Art Centre from 2001-2005. Barbara teaches at the Mount Anan Botanic Garden, Royal Art Society & Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. Her work is published in the key guide of Australian Reptiles and Amphibians, (L.Cronin) and scientific texts and journals. She has held 2 successful solo exhibitions, 2x 2-person exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions. She is represented in the Shirley Sherwood collection and collections in England, Japan and Canada. She has had sellouts at Botanica 2000-present.
